Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Banasthali Vidyapith
The Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology has evolved as a multidisciplinary center at Banasthali Vidyapith, and various programs in Bioscience, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Microbiology have been developed to meet the growing demand for skilled and knowledgeable manpower to carry out meaningful Biotechnology based activities.
In the last decade, Banasthali Vidyapith has emerged as a leading center for education and research in biotechnology and allied disciplines, making a meaningful contribution toward popularizing life sciences as a preferred career choice, especially among women.
The Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology has excelled in both research and teaching as part of its academic pursuits. As it stands today, it caters to nearly all areas of life sciences with a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach in teaching, research, and learning. Hands-on experience in biological science is not just about understanding concepts; they also play a crucial role in helping students develop essential scientific skills. In line with the importance given to practical knowledge and upskilling in NEP 2020, laboratory courses are given priority, and new theory courses are introduced to impart knowledge in emerging and novel areas of life sciences.
The department hosts a Centre for Bioinformatics (Sub DIC) under the BTIS programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The Centre is being extensively used by PG students in Life Sciences and allied disciplines, Ph.D. students, and the teaching faculty for analysis of biological data, bibliographic references to published literature including databases and patents, access to the internet, and other computational work
The department is continuously evolving in both basic and applied research in specialized areas, viz., plant physiology and biochemistry, stress biology, microbiology, animal physiology, immunology, biodiversity, bioinformatics, biofuel, etc.
New technology that enhances performance across life science researches facilitating problem targeting in various sectors such as textile, paper manufacturing/recycling, and fuel industries developed potential technology solutions was developed by the departmental research teams.
Progressive translational research successfully led to the transfer of the two technologies from the laboratory to the industry and the establishment of 3 startup companies, Drumlins Water Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Greenathon Technologies, and SPSpectrum Pvt. Ltd., by faculty members and researchers.
